Letter from Fr. Hurlbert and Therese Craig

Dear Families of Bridgeport Catholic Academy and St. Gabriel School:

We are pleased to announce that we have a principal! Mr. Daniel Flaherty will be leading our educational ministries as principal of both schools. He brings with him a wealth of experience, having served for 18 years at the Sacred Heart Schools on the north side of Chicago as Dean of Students, Assistant Head of School, and then Head of the Middle School. He later served for 12 years as principal at St. Pius X Parish School in Lombard, IL. From our conversations with him, it is clear that he is a highly capable, motivated, and professional educator. In addition, he articulated an inspiring vision for Catholic schools’ working hand-in-hand with the parish. Acknowledging that we are faced with many uncertainties in the coming academic year related to the coronavirus pandemic, we believe Mr. Flaherty to be committed and equipped to lead a first-rate academic program in the context of a lived Catholic faith.

Many thanks to those who served on the Principal Search Committee, whose questions and engagement were key in helping us to discern the right person. In addition, they showed our candidates the best face of our schools, communicating to them just how committed we are to our educational ministry.

You will be hearing directly from Mr. Flaherty soon, but we wanted to at least get the word out to you now. Thank you for your patience as we moved through the principal search process we realize that this can be a “nail-biter,” especially when it lasts into the summer months. We are moving into new territory by uniting our schools’ administration, even as we work to maintain the individual identities and charisms of the separate schools. We hope that as a united parish we will find ways to leverage this unity for the benefit of both campuses, both schools.
